Just like you, your dentist has teeth too! Believe it or not, they also have dental emergencies. Dr. Jeff Dworak at Capehart Family Dentistry in Bellevue recently cracked a tooth and learned a little something about dentistry that he couldn’t learn in dental school. He learned that it hurts, it hurts a lot! And while he has always had extreme care and compassion for his patients, he gained a little bit more empathy for those who have experienced the same thing.

What happens when you crack a tooth?
Having a cracked tooth may not initially seem like a big deal. However, a crack compromises your tooth and it won't be long before you start to experience more significant problems. This is because the fracture can allow harmful bacteria into your tooth that can develop into decay or infection. If you develop an infection in the nerve of your tooth, you will need a root canal to eliminate it and to preserve your tooth. Unfortunately, a dental infection will not go away and if left untreated it can eventually lead to tooth loss.
Why Did your tooth crack?
Many circumstances cause a tooth to fracture. An old metal restoration that is breaking down may be the cause of a fracture, as well as biting into hard food. You can avoid problems with food by cutting hard items such as carrots, apples, or crusty bread into smaller bite-size pieces.
